While I mostly enjoy using the newit is a long device and quite slippery. HTC just announced that the next generation smaller HTC One product, the HTC One Mini 2, will be coming soon with a smaller size and reduced specifications.
The One Mini 2 will have a 4.5 inch 720p display, latest HTC Sens 6 UI, and a 5 megapixel front-facing camera. Other key specifications include:
- Metal design like the HTC One (M8) in gunmetal gray, glacial silver, and amber gold
- HTC BoomSound front facing stereo speakers with same amp as One (M8)
- Qualcomm Snapdragon 400, 1.2 GHz quad-core processor
- 1GB RAM
- 16GB internal storage and microSD card slot
- 2100 mAh battery
- Dimensions of 137.43 x 65.04 x 10.6 mm and 137 grams
If you compare the One Mini to the One Mini 2, you can see that the new version is just slightly bigger with a larger display and a higher capacity battery, has the same processor, RAM, and storage capacity, and has a different camera design. I am very curious to test out the non-UltraPixel camera to see if this is what HTC should have done with the M8.
You will notice in the press images that the One Mini 2 only has a single rear camera, but it is a 13 megapixel model and is likely to take better photos than the One (M8). I would like to have seen HTC focus on a single great camera on the One (M8) as well.
While I like the look of the new HTC One Mini 2, I still would like to see more smaller/mini versions from manufacturers with higher end internal specs to more closely match their bigger siblings. Most of the time we see smaller size also mean less of a device. If the price is right here, the One Mini 2 may appeal to those who like a smaller form factor device.
An HTC One Mini 2 arrives at my house today so stay tuned for a review in a couple of weeks. Let me know if you have any specific questions you want me to answer as I evaluate the device.
HTC reports that the HTC One Mini 2 will launch in EMEA and North Asian countries starting in June. Last year, we only saw the One Mini appear on AT&T. My wife loved using thefor several months, but is now in love with the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the camera performance so she won’t be going back to a One Mini 2.
